The pediatric intensive care unit, or PICU, is the hospital department that provides the highest caliber of care for young patients. The PICU operates similarly to the intensive care unit (ICU), where adults receive specialized care, but its staff is uniquely trained in caring for children. The PICU has the most infrastructure and equipment designed with children in mind. This unit offers the greatest caliber of care, which is generally not available in other hospital departments.
