One of Thailand’s largest islands, Ko Samui is home to coconut groves, mountainous rainforests, hidden waterfalls and palm-fringed beaches. “It’s a very traditional sun-and-sand destination where travelers can really relax, sail, snorkel,” said staff member Tom, describing our big tour of Southeast Asia: Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, and enjoy most days off. “When it comes to hotels, travelers stay in seaside resort-style facilities. You can spend your free time relaxing on the beach of Koh Samui or go to Wat Phra Yai, better known as the Big Buddha Temple. The ornate temple houses a nearly 40-foot-tall golden Buddha statue and is connected to the north coast of Koh Samui by a short causeway. Visit in the morning and watch the locals offer food and flowers and listen to the monks say their morning prayers. Visiting temples is one of our favorite ways to learn about the Thai way of life.

Surprisingly, the backdrop of tall limestone cliffs adorned with green vegetation is the least interesting on Monkey Island. The area is home to a colony of crab-eating macaques, curious monkeys that can be seen playing on the beach and swimming in the sea. Monkeys are skilled swimmers, even swimming between islands in search of food. Fun Fact: Macaques on Monkey Island have occasionally been observed using found tools, such as rocks, to help crack shellfish open.
