“Cardiac surgery” refers to the surgical procedures performed on the heart or major blood vessels—the principal veins and arteries that supply the heart—by highly qualified cardiac surgeons. Treatments for congenital heart defects, endocarditis, rheumatoid heart disease, atherosclerosis, and consequences from ischemic heart disease (such coronary artery bypass grafting) may need these operations.
