Environmental and Social Impacts of the Sardar Sarovar

While the Sardar sarovar DamS is celebrated for its contributions to water management and power generation, it has also faced criticism due to its environmental and social consequences. The construction of the dam led to the displacement of thousands of people, primarily from indigenous communities, and submerged vast tracts of forests and agricultural land. Environmentalists have raised concerns about the loss of biodiversity and the disruption of the Narmada River’s ecosystem. Despite efforts to rehabilitate affected communities and mitigate environmental damage, the project remains a focal point of ongoing discussions about sustainable development, equitable resource distribution, and the rights of marginalized groups.
