Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP)

Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) is a group of blood tests that provides vital information about your body’s chemical balance and metabolism. The BMP typically measures eight components in the blood:

  1. Glucose – Indicates blood sugar levels, important for diagnosing and managing diabetes.
  2. Calcium – Essential for bones, muscles, and nerve function. Abnormal levels may indicate bone, kidney, or thyroid issues.
  3. Sodium, Potassium, and Chloride – These electrolytes help regulate fluid balance, muscle contractions, and nerve signaling. Imbalances can cause dehydration, heart, or kidney problems.
  4. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) – Helps evaluate lung and kidney function and their role in regulating blood acid-base balance.
  5. Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) and Creatinine – Waste products filtered by the kidneys. These measurements help assess kidney health.

Doctors often order a BMP as part of a routine checkup or to monitor conditions like high blood pressure, kidney disease, or metabolic issues. It’s a quick test that provides essential insights into organ function and overall health.
