Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease (MND), is a fatal illness that gradually destroys the higher motor neurons that govern voluntary muscles. As neurons are gradually destroyed over time, people develop muscle atrophy and lose their ability to move, speak, swallow, and breathe. Individual symptoms vary, but ultimately lead to paralysis and severe impairment. Although there is no cure for MND, drugs are intended to relieve symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life.
