A Comprehensive Overview of the GATE Life Science Paper Pattern

The GATE Life Science Paper Pattern is one of the elementary requirements for any student appearing for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering under the Life Sciences stream. GATE is conducted by IISc, Bengaluru. This entrance exam acts as a passageway for the students who wish to continue postgraduate studies in top Indian institutions. The GATE Life Science Exam paper comes in three sections:

1. General Aptitude (GA): this section has 10 questions, and it carries 15 marks for General Aptitude. The same judges the verbal skills, along with a candidate’s aptness towards quantitative ability, combining analytical reasoning and judgments

2. Chemistry: Compulsories are pertinent for those who are reading Life Science. Both are composed of mandatory marks of 25 carried on 15 compulsory chemistry questions along with general queries encompassing basic stuff pertaining to atomic structure and types of chemical equilibria. 3. Major Subjects: They should pick any one of their choice from a list containing five subjects out of which are Biochemistry (XL-Q) Botany (XL-R), Microbiology (XL-S), Zoology (XL-T) and Food Technology (XL-U). Every main subject contains two questions, amounting to 40 marks in aggregate.

The GATE Life Science paper consists of 65 questions amounting to 100 marks in three hours.
The detail is as follows:
– General Aptitude: 10 questions for 15 marks.
– Chemistry: 15 questions for 25 marks.
– Core Subjects: 40 questions from two chosen subjects contributing 60 marks.

There are questions set in one-mark and two-mark. For General Aptitude, the five one-mark and five two-mark questions have been put. For Chemistry, it is five one-mark and ten two-mark questions. The same applies for other core subjects as well.

Question Types

The GATE Life Science paper contains three question types:

– MCQs: These questions will have four choices and contain a negative marking in case the answer is incorrect.
– Multiple Select Questions (MSQs): More than one correct answer, without negative marking.
– Numerical Answer Type (NAT): A number as an answer with no options.
