Soumik Datta: Innovating Indian Music

Soumik Datta’s Career Journey reflects the essence of the “Global Indian”—a blend of rich cultural roots and a modern global outlook. Born into a creative family, with his father, Soumilya, a banker, and his mother, Sangeeta, an art-house film director, Soumik’s path was shaped by both tradition and innovation. His brother, Souvid, is a renowned photographer and filmmaker, making creativity a family trait.

A master of the sarod, Soumik fuses Indian classical music with global genres, earning acclaim for his dynamic performances and cross-cultural collaborations. After studying at University College London and Trinity Laban Conservatoire, his career skyrocketed when Jay-Z invited him to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in 2006. Soumik shared the stage with Beyoncé but chose his own artistic direction over joining her tour.

As a true Global Indian, Soumik’s work blends heritage with innovation, curating festivals and events that celebrate music from around the world. His journey is a testament to how global Indians are reshaping the arts.
