Ruthenium is a hard, lustrous, brittle, silvery-white metal that does not tarnish at room temperature, and it is one of the rare transition metals. This metal is a member of the platinum group and is classified in group 8 of the periodic table. Like the other metals in the platinum group, ruthenium is inert to most other chemicals. In the environment, it is found as a free metal or occasionally it is found as a chemical combination with platinum, osmium and iridium ores. Sometimes it is also associated with nickel deposits. Ruthenium is typically alloyed with other metals to improve durability and corrosion resistance.

Applications

Ruthenium has a wide variety of application in diverse fields. Few of the applications of Ruthenium are listed below:

  • In electrical industry it is used in manufacturing of electronic chips.
  • Chemically it is used in the form of anodes for chlorine production in electrochemical cells.
  • It is used as a hardener when it is mixed with other metals to form alloy.
  • Ruthenium also can be used in therapy. For instance, 106 isotope of Ru has application in radiotherapy of malignant cells of eye.
  • Ruthenium vapor get deposited on the surface of substrate and has magneto-resistive property. This property of Ru is used in making a layer or film on hard disk drives.
