ARE 3D GEL PLATES LEGAL?
The legality of 3D number plates in the UK is a controversial subject. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) permits 3D plates provided they meet certain regulations. They just need to be able to read the plates and they must meet DVLA standards for size font spaceing material etc
The DVLA says that 3D plates are fine, so long as the characters chosen from a list of acceptable options and must be solid black.

Material: Number plates must be made from reflective material.
Visibility: Plates should not have any background patterns that could affect readability or reflectiveness.
Color: Front plates: White with black characters.
Rear plates: Yellow with black characters.
Size and Font: Characters must be of a specified size and use the standard Charles Wright font. The spacing between characters and the margins around the plate are regulated.
BS AU 145e Standard: Since September 2021, all number plates must comply with the BS AU 145e standard, which ensures durability and visibility.
3D/4D Character Material: Characters on 3D and 4D plates should have a matte finish and not be overly reflective. They are typically made from acrylic or gel.
No Tinted Plates: Plates must remain untinted to ensure the characters are clearly readable.
