Sandhya Arghya: Third day of Chhath Puja and its significance

The third day of Chhath Puja is called Sandhya Arghya, when devotees offer prayers to the setting sun by giving arghya (offering of water). This day holds special significance for seeking the blessings of Lord Surya (Sun God) and for prosperity.

During Sandhya Arghya, devotees gather at rivers, ponds, or other water bodies during sunset to pay homage to the setting sun. Women, who play a significant role in this ritual, stand in waist-deep water holding bamboo baskets filled with offerings like fruits, sugarcane, coconut, rice, and thekua, a traditional sweet. These offerings symbolize purity, gratitude, and the reliance of all beings on the natural elements.

As the sun dips below the horizon, devotees pray for the well-being, prosperity, and health of their families. The setting sun is revered as it signifies the end of a day, marking a cycle and promising a fresh beginning. The ritual is accompanied by devotional songs and chants, creating an atmosphere of piety and unity.
